Fun Activities to Keep Your Child Busy in the Car

Riding in a car, bus, or train is part of the daily routine for many families. Engaging in an activity during the ride that both you and your young children enjoy is a great way to pass the time. Look for options that are both fun and educational.

The following list of fun activities will get you started:

Reading activities for kids in car

  • Sing Songs Keep CDs on hand in the car with kid friendly songs that you enjoy listening to as well. You can also load songs onto your smartphone, tablet, or Kindle to play in the car. Sing along with favorite songs, and encourage your kids to do the same.

Alternatively, you can switch up the routine and sing without recorded music. If your kids are in a fun mood, have them try making up new lyrics to a song.

  • Listen Audio Books There is a wealth of kids’ books available in audio form. Start by checking the selection at your local library. Audiobooks are a great way to make the hours go more quickly during a long car trip. While riding on a train or bus, kids can listen independently with headphones.

  • Read the Street Signs Regardless of where you live, you are likely to pass at least a few street signs during a daily ride around town. For young kids, spotting and naming basic street signs like “stop” and “yield” is a great exercise. Longer road trips are an ideal opportunity to look for new signs (i.e. signs for “deer out in the country”).

  • Look for License Plates Finally, you can’t go wrong with the classic license plate game. Keep a list of the license plates that you see around town. Make a checklist before going on a road trip and see how many you can find.
