5 Ideas to Strengthen the Bond Between Children and Grandparents

There is nothing quite as special as the relationship between a child and a grandparent. Instead of sitting around the house watching TV or playing a video game with your grandchild, take one or more of the following ideas to develop the bond that stays dear to the heart forever.

  1. Connect with nature. A treasure hunt is a simple way to make a walk around the neighborhood more engaging. Children learn observational skills as they take in their surroundings.

  2. Look at parent baby pictures. The next time you visit your grandchildren, bring along some of your favorite photos of their parents. These photos will provide endless opportunities to share stories from their childhood. Young children and teenagers alike enjoy hearing these tales.

  3. Play cards. Most children don’t sit around playing card games the way that previous generations have played them. Depending on the age of your grandchildren, you can play anything from “crazy eights” to “mah jong.” Children get a kick out of competing against their grandparents, especially when their grandparents make mistakes.

  4. Bake cookies. Baking and cooking are great activities for children to work on following directions, measuring ingredients, and developing patience, all while creating delicious foods to eat. Think about sharing family recipes that your grandchildren will be able to pass on to their own children someday.

  5. Go to the library. Sharing books will recreate memories that last a lifetime. Story hours are perfect for younger readers. Afterward you can browse the children’s section and select a few books together. Older readers may prefer to choose a title that you’ll both enjoy reading. After you’ve read a book, you can make time to discuss it together over lunch or hot chocolate.
