8 Tips to Keep Your Little One Warm in the Winter

Keeping your children warm is easy. All you have to do is think about what makes you feel warmer. Children lose heat faster than adults, so don’t wait until they are starting to get chilled to take action. Tips for Winter Dressing Follow these 8 simple tips to keep your little one warm and toasty throughout the winter:
  1. Wear a Hat! Children, especially small babies, lose heat through the tops of their heads. Put a hat on them if they tend to get cold quickly. Put a hat on older children to protect them from the cold when they go outside.
  2. Add Layers Layering is a great way to trap body heat without letting children feel burdened with bulky clothing. Make sure to keep the densest fabrics on the outside. Add layers of blankets to a small baby’s seat and then cover them as needed to ensure warmth.
  3. Programmable Thermostats Use a programmable thermostat to keep temperatures constant. This will eliminate the need to adjust temperatures and will help to maintain a steady temperature.
  4. Bake Away! Keep the child close by when you are baking. The heat from the oven will warm up the kitchen and adjacent rooms quite nicely and you will have plenty of warm food to eat.
  5. Warm up Before You Dress Make sure the child is warm before you dress them. This prevents adding too many layers and keeps them nice and warm without causing them to overheat.
  6. Use Heavier Curtains Use heavier curtains in the children’s bedrooms. This prevents drafts and keeps the heat inside the room where it belongs.
  7. Block Drafts! Put rugs, towels or poodle noodles at the base of doors or along window sills where drafts may find their way inside the home or from room to room.
  8. Sit in the Sunlight Allow the sun to shine into the room or set the baby’s swing or seat in sunlight. As long as the sun is not directly on the baby, the warmth will keep them nice and toasty.
