5 Fun Ways for Children to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a great opportunity to teach your children about Dr. King and America’s history of injustice, fight for equality and the Civil Rights Movement. Educate them about his role in bringing social equality in the United States and why we celebrate this day. Involve them in educational activities and other activities organized in his honor.

Here are 5 fun ways to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with your children:

  1. Read Books about Martin Luther King, Jr.

Children enjoy reading about history. They can learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. by reading books like “The Story of Martin Luther King, Jr.” and “Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”. They can also read books about the history of slavery and fight for freedom.

  2. Visit Free Events Within Your Community

Check your local newspaper, search the internet or watch the local news to find free activities and events organized in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and let your children participate in them. They can participate in plays, parades, and other performances.

  3. Watch Movies and Dr. King’s Speeches

Show your children movies about social injustice and let them watch Dr. King’s speeches on YouTube. Ask them to write down their own dreams for the world after watching Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

  4. Color a Picture

Ask your preschoolers to color a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. and explain to them why we are celebrating his birthday. Teach them how Dr. King helped others. Discuss topics like tolerance and acceptance and see how they respond.

  5. Visit a Memorial or Museum

Visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C. or the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. They plan several educational activities for the holiday including discussions on the life and struggle of Dr. King.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is much more than a holiday. Take this day to share with your children the life of a man who did a lot for America and make learning fun through books, crafts and tours.
